Dead Sea Turtle Found After Boat Propeller Strike in Crete

Saturday, 4 July 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A dead sea turtle was found on Friday afternoon at Pacheia Ammos beach near Stavros, in the Chania regional unit of western Crete. The turtle appeared to have been struck by a boat propeller. Local authorities were notified for collection, though retrieval was still pending as of the report. Sea turtles, particularly the loggerhead species (Caretta caretta), are a protected species commonly found in Cretan waters. Boat strikes are one of the leading causes of sea turtle injury and death in the Mediterranean. Visitors boating or using personal watercraft in coastal areas are encouraged to reduce speed near shorelines and watch for turtles at the surface. If you spot an injured or dead sea turtle, contact the local municipality or the ARCHELON sea turtle rescue network to report it.
