Back to newsAmerican military personnel stationed at the US Naval Support Activity base in Souda Bay, near Chania, celebrated the 250th anniversary of US Independence Day on July 4, 2026. The event featured an all-day celebration that concluded with a fireworks display visible from the surrounding area.
The base sits along Souda Bay, one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean, located approximately 7 kilometers east of Chania city center. The fireworks were likely visible from parts of the Akrotiri peninsula and the Souda Bay coastline.
Tourists staying in or around Chania may have noticed the fireworks in the evening sky. The base itself is not open to the public, but the surrounding Souda Bay area offers scenic viewpoints and the nearby Souda port serves as a ferry terminal connecting Crete to Piraeus.
