Read the story

A few meters east of Ano Kapetaniana , on the road leading to Agios Ioannis , we meet the large single-room temple of Archangel Michael . While externally it looks like a modern church, inside the visitor will be impressed by the frescoes dating back to the Venetian period (14th century).

Despite the damage they have suffered by time, this is still a superb specimen of that period. The church operated probably as a dependency of the monastery of Kirie Eleison and is built very close to a springand the place is called Monastiriaka , while till a few years ago the visitor could discern some remnants of cells.

The founding inscription mentions as founder the monk Matthew and his partners. The iconographic decoration includes many scenes from the Passion of Jesus (eg Whipping), the circle of the honored Archangel Michael and scenes of the Second Coming (almost all over the west wall).

Also, on the murals there are engravings by the various travelers of the time, which is quite common in seaside monasteries of the time.
