Read the story

The church of Saint Irene (Agia Irini) in Axos is one of the many Byzantine churches of the village. It is located inside the village and a few meters west of the hill of Ancient Axos , which was one of the strongest cities during the Greco-Roman Period that flourished until the Byzantine period.

The temple belongs to the type of single-storey with domem, with a narthex added to the west. The dome is accentuated by a carved stone archway on small columns.

It is dated to the 14th century and few traces of fresco decoration are preserved in the interior, including scenes from the Christ circle and individual saints mainly in the eastern part of the temple. In the background of the temple there is a well, where according to tradition, anyone who tries to enter dies.
