Marathi is a small, sheltered sandy beach tucked into the eastern side of the Akrotiri peninsula, roughly 20 kilometers northeast of Chania. What sets it apart from the more crowded beaches of the Chania region is its combination of calm, shallow water and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere that has not yet been overtaken by large resort infrastructure. The bay faces east, which means it is naturally protected from the prevailing northwesterly winds that batter exposed beaches along the northern coast. The water here is typically flat and clear, making it one of the more reliably swimmable spots in the area even on days when other beaches are choppy.

Getting There

By car, Marathi is accessible via the Akrotiri peninsula road out of Chania. Head northeast on the E75 and follow signs toward Akrotiri, then continue through the villages of Korakies and Profitis Ilias, bearing right toward the coast. The road narrows as you descend toward the beach but is manageable for standard vehicles. Parking is available directly at or near the beach, making it a straightforward day trip from Chania or nearby towns. There is no reliable public bus service to Marathi itself, so a rental car is effectively necessary unless you are staying locally. Arriving by boat is also an option for those on sailing itineraries along the northern coast, as the bay offers reasonable anchorage in calm conditions.

Activities and Water Conditions

The water at Marathi is shallow near shore and clears quickly to a deeper blue farther out. The sandy bottom and absence of strong currents make it well-suited for snorkeling, particularly around the rocky edges of the bay where fish and sea life congregate. Visibility is generally good. The beach has sunbeds and umbrellas available for hire, and a taverna nearby means you can spend a full day without needing to bring substantial supplies. The pace here is slow, and most visitors come to swim, snorkel, and eat rather than engage in motorized watersports.

Practical Tips

Because the beach faces east, mornings offer the best light and the most direct sun. By mid-afternoon in summer, parts of the beach fall into shadow earlier than fully south-facing beaches. This also means the water tends to warm up well through the morning hours. Wind exposure is low compared to the open northern coast, but occasional northerlies can still reach the bay in July and August. If you see white caps on the water offshore, conditions at Marathi will usually still be calmer than at exposed alternatives.

In peak summer, July and August, the beach draws a moderate crowd of families and locals alongside tourists staying in Chania. It does not reach the saturation levels of beaches like Elafonisi or Balos, partly because it requires more deliberate navigation to reach. Arriving before 10am secures a good spot with a sunbed. Shoulder season visitors in June or September will find the beach noticeably quieter, with taverna service still operating.

Best Months to Visit

May and early June offer warm but not oppressive temperatures, clear water, and thin crowds. Late September and October remain pleasant for swimming, with sea temperatures that hold well after summer. The core July-August window is viable but busier and hotter; the beach's natural shelter from wind makes the heat more intense midday. April is borderline for swimming depending on your tolerance for cooler water.

Who It's Ideal For

Marathi suits families with young children particularly well. The calm, shallow water, sandy entry, nearby facilities, and on-site food options remove most of the friction from a beach day with kids. Couples looking for a quiet half-day away from Chania's busier beaches will also find it worthwhile. Snorkelers get reasonable value from the rocky margins of the bay. It is not a destination for surfers, partygoers, or anyone seeking dramatic scenery on the scale of Balos or Preveli. What it offers instead is a functional, pleasant, unhurried beach that delivers exactly what it promises without requiring much compromise.
