The drive from Heraklion takes roughly 75 minutes. From Agios Nikolaos, the regional capital 11 kilometres to the south, the drive along the coastal road is about 15 minutes. Parking is available directly at the beach, with a flat area that accommodates a reasonable number of vehicles, though spaces fill quickly in July and August. On foot from Elounda town centre, the beach is a short walk of under ten minutes along the waterfront promenade heading south. Boat access is also straightforward: water taxis and small ferries run regularly from Elounda harbour to Spinalonga, and some operators stop near the beach. Visiting by boat from Agios Nikolaos is also an option during summer. ## Activities and Water Conditions The water is exceptionally clear, with visibility reaching several metres on calm days, which makes this an ideal spot for snorkeling. The seabed transitions from sand to patches of seagrass and scattered rocks as you move further from shore, and these rocky areas host sea urchins, small fish, and occasional octopus. If you want to avoid the worst of the heat, arrive before 10:00 and claim a spot early. In July and August, sunbeds are taken by 09:00 on most days. The meltemi, the prevailing northerly summer wind, rarely creates problems here due to the sheltered orientation of the bay. On the occasions it does pick up, the surface chop is minor compared to exposed beaches on the north coast. Shoulder season crowds are noticeably lighter: in May, June, and September you will find the beach comfortable and unhurried, with sea temperatures warm enough for swimming from late May onward. ## Best Months to Visit May through October covers the swimming season, but June and September offer the best balance. The water is warm, the beach is not overcrowded, and prices at nearby accommodation and tavernas are more reasonable than peak summer. October remains mild and is worth considering for those who prioritise a quieter visit over warm water, though swimming becomes less comfortable as the month progresses. ## Who It Is Ideal For Elounda Beach suits families well. The calm water, gradual entry, organised facilities, and nearby food options remove most of the logistical friction of a beach day with children. Couples looking for a scenic, relaxed afternoon will find the view across to Spinalonga hard to improve on, particularly in the late afternoon light. Snorkelers of intermediate experience will find enough underwater interest to keep them occupied. It is not a beach for surfers or those seeking isolation, but for anyone who wants reliable, comfortable, visually striking swimming in eastern Crete, Elounda Beach is a sound choice.
