Island Overview
A frontal system is crossing Crete's northern coast today, bringing light but persistent rain to Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Hersonissos and Malia. Temperatures island-wide sit between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius, mild for early November. The sheltered south and east remain dry under thick cloud cover, with Ierapetra and Makrigialos reaching highs just above 20 degrees.
North vs. South
The divide is sharp today. Rethymno records the heaviest rainfall at nearly 16 mm, with gusts reaching 23 km/h. Chania picks up 7 mm with lighter winds at around 9 km/h. Heraklion and Hersonissos see 4 to 5 mm of rain. Cross to the south and the picture changes: Ierapetra, Makrigialos and Elounda stay completely dry, though the trade-off is considerably stronger wind. Ierapetra gusts top 42 km/h and Makrigialos reaches 38 km/h.
The Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are almost certainly catching heavier precipitation than coastal readings suggest. Temperatures near or below freezing are expected overnight above 1,500 metres, with snow possible on the highest peaks. If you are planning a hike today, stick to low-altitude trails and carry a waterproof layer regardless of how the coast looks when you set out.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures hold up well across the island, ranging from 21.8 degrees near Chania and Rethymno to 22.7 degrees near Sitia and Makrigialos. Waves are moderate, reaching 2.0 metres off Chania and 1.9 metres near Malia and Sitia. UV levels are low island-wide, peaking at index 4.45 near Ierapetra, well within the low-risk range. Light sun protection during midday hours remains sensible.
Swim Verdict
Sea temperature is comfortable at around 22 degrees across most of the coast. However, conditions vary by location. On the north coast, wave heights of 1.7 to 2.0 metres make beach swimming inadvisable, particularly for children. The south coast offers calmer water below 1 metre near Ierapetra and Makrigialos, though strong onshore winds reduce comfort. Today is a marginal day for swimming island-wide.
Practical Tip
If your plans are flexible, base yourself in the south today. Ierapetra and Makrigialos are dry, warmer, and within reach of sheltered coves. Pack a windproof jacket for the strong gusts. Save northern highlights such as the old town of Chania or the Heraklion Archaeological Museum for an indoor afternoon activity once the front passes.
