Island Overview

A low-pressure system sitting over the central Aegean is pushing moisture onto Crete's northern slopes today. Light rain showers are affecting Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Hersonissos, Malia, and Sitia, with accumulations ranging from 5 mm in Chania to 11 mm in Sitia. Afternoon highs are mild -- 19 to 20°C across most of the island -- and UV levels on the north coast are negligible, index 1.0 to 1.5. This is firmly autumn weather. A jacket is no longer optional.

North Coast vs South Coast

The contrast today is clear. The north coast from Chania through to Hersonissos is wet, overcast, and breezy, with winds reaching 29 to 37 km/h in places. Rethymno sees the strongest north-coast gusts at 37 km/h. Chania faces the heaviest wave action: 3.2 metres, the highest reading on the island today.

Cross to the south and conditions are noticeably different. Ierapetra, Makrigialos, and Elounda are dry, with overcast skies but no rain. Ierapetra is the warmest spot at 21°C and carries the highest UV of the day, index 4.6 -- moderate, meaning a factor 30 sunscreen is still appropriate if the cloud thins. The trade-off is wind: Ierapetra is gusting to 47 km/h, Makrigialos to 36 km/h. This is not a calm day anywhere on the island.

Mountain Conditions

The White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno are wet and likely carrying low cloud above 800 metres. Gorge trails will be slippery and visibility patchy at altitude. Confirm access status with local authorities before any mountain excursion today.

Sea State, Wind, and UV

Sea temperatures remain well above the European autumn average: 22.4°C in Chania, 23.5°C off Hersonissos and Malia, and 23.7 to 23.9°C along the east and south coasts. The water is warm. The surface, however, is not calm on the north shore. Waves of 2.7 to 3.2 metres are running from Heraklion to Chania, and 2.3 to 2.9 metres between Sitia and Hersonissos. The south coast is the exception: Ierapetra and Makrigialos show waves below 1.3 metres.

Swim Verdict

Swimming is reasonable on the south coast today. Ierapetra and Makrigialos offer the calmest water, the warmest sea temperatures, and dry skies. Verify beach flags on arrival given the persistent wind. The north coast is not recommended for casual swimming: waves above 2.7 metres and ongoing rain make conditions unappealing and unsafe for most swimmers.

Practical Tip for 15 October

If you have flexibility, a drive south across the Mesara plain toward Ierapetra is the right call today. You trade the rain for dry skies, warm water, and good road visibility. Bring a windproof layer regardless of which coast you are on, and keep a rain jacket within reach if you are staying in the north or heading into the hills.
