Island Overview
A weather system moving in from the west is bringing thunderstorms and significant rainfall to the central and northwestern parts of Crete today. The east of the island is escaping the worst of it with overcast skies, little to no rain, and noticeably warmer temperatures. The divide is sharp: Rethymno and Chania are in a different day entirely from Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda.
North Coast vs East and South
The north coast is bearing the brunt of the system. Rethymno is the worst hit, with 18 mm of rain expected, winds gusting to 39 km/h, and a UV index that has collapsed to 1.6. Chania is under thunderstorm conditions with 15.5 mm of rainfall. Hersonissos and Heraklion are also wet, logging 15.8 mm and 12.2 mm respectively, with gusts above 35 km/h at Hersonissos.
The east coast is a different story. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda record zero precipitation and reach highs of 24°C under grey but dry skies. Ierapetra on the south coast sees a trace of rain (0.5 mm) and holds at 23°C. Sitia sits between the two zones with light showers (8.4 mm) but retains meaningful UV exposure at 3.8.
Mountain Ranges
The Lefka Ori above Chania and the Psiloritis massif behind Rethymno are catching and intensifying the incoming system. Expect heavy rain, low cloud, and poor visibility at altitude on the western side. Gorge hikes west of Heraklion carry real risk today. Routes in the Lasithi Plateau area are quieter but remain overcast.
Sea State, Wind and UV
The sea is roughest off the northwest. Waves of 3.26 m off Chania and 2.26 m off Rethymno make those stretches unsafe for any water activity. Further east, conditions calm considerably: Ag. Nikolaos sits at 0.84 m and Elounda at 1.02 m. Sea temperatures remain warm island-wide, from 22.6°C in Chania to 24.0°C in Ierapetra and Makrigialos. UV is low in the west (1.6 in Rethymno) and moderate in the east (4.85 in Elounda and Ierapetra), so sunscreen still applies if you are outdoors on the east coast.
Swim Verdict
Do not swim on the north or northwest coast today. Thunderstorms, waves above 1.5 m, and gusts over 35 km/h make conditions dangerous from Chania through to Hersonissos. The clear choice is the east coast: Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda offer calm water under 1 m, no rain, and sea temperatures of 23.9°C. Ierapetra on the south coast is also a solid option, with minimal swell and 24°C water.
Practical Tip
If your itinerary is flexible, drive east. From Heraklion, Ag. Nikolaos is roughly 70 km along the national road, under an hour. You trade a wet and windy afternoon for an overcast but dry one with warm water and 24°C air. It is worth the drive today.
