Island Overview
September 19 delivers another dry day across Crete. No rain is expected anywhere on the island, and temperatures range from 25.5°C in Sitia to 29°C in Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. The feel is late summer: warm but no longer punishing, with a steady breeze keeping coastal spots comfortable through the afternoon.
North Coast vs South Coast
The sharpest contrast today runs along the spine of the island. Chania and Rethymno on the northwest coast are sitting under overcast skies, with highs of 27.2°C and 25.7°C respectively. Winds there are relatively light at 11 to 13 km/h, so the cloud cover is stable and not particularly disruptive. Heraklion, Hersonissos and Malia are partly cloudy, with winds picking up to 17 to 20 km/h and highs in the 26 to 27°C range.
Head east or south and the picture brightens considerably. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda are mainly clear at 29°C, though winds are brisker at 23 km/h. The south coast, from Ierapetra to Makrigialos, is the day's standout for sunshine: clear skies, highs of 27 to 28°C, and waves barely above 0.2 metres. Ierapetra's overnight low of 23.4°C is a reminder of how well the south retains heat into autumn.
Mountains
Cloud is draped over the White Mountains above Chania and will likely linger on the upper slopes of Psiloritis through the morning. Hikers heading into Samaria Gorge or along the E4 trail in the western ranges should carry a light layer. Above 1,500 metres, visibility may be reduced early on. Conditions should improve through the afternoon as the overcast gradually thins and breaks.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are consistent island-wide, from 25.5°C at Sitia and Makrigialos to 26.6°C at Heraklion. Wave heights are low to moderate: the calmest water is on the south coast, with Ierapetra at 0.22 m and Makrigialos at 0.28 m, while the north-central and east coasts see gentle swells of 0.7 to 0.88 metres. UV peaks at 7.0 in Rethymno, placing the whole island in the moderate-to-high category. Sunscreen is necessary even under partial cloud. Wind gusts are most noticeable on the east coast, where Sitia, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos all reach 23 km/h.
Swim Verdict and Practical Tip
The sea is in excellent condition today. Water is warm everywhere, waves are manageable island-wide, and there is no precipitation to disturb visibility. The south coast offers the flattest and most sheltered conditions. The east coast is slightly breezy but comfortable for most swimmers. On the northern coastline, exposed beaches around Malia and Hersonissos see swells of 0.82 to 0.84 metres, which is fine for swimming but worth factoring in with young children.
Practical tip: if you are based in the Chania area and the overcast skies are not what you had in mind, drive an hour east toward Heraklion or cross the mountains south to Agia Galini. Both put you under brighter skies with sea temperatures above 26°C and no meaningful change to your day.
