Island Overview
September 11 brings a warm, dry day to Crete. Highs reach 27 to 29°C across all ten forecast points, with no rainfall expected anywhere on the island. The late-summer pattern holds: long sunny hours, flat seas, and water temperatures still above 26°C from coast to coast.
North vs South
The north coast opens with fog in Heraklion this morning. The haze is typical for this time of year when sea surface temperatures are high and overnight land cooling is modest. Expect it to lift by mid-morning, after which Heraklion climbs to 28.6°C. Chania and Rethymno, further west along the north shore, start clear and reach similar highs of 28.7°C and 28.1°C respectively. Overnight lows in Heraklion drop to 17°C, noticeably cooler than elsewhere on the north coast.
The south coast is the warmest and calmest sector today. Makrigialos leads the island at 29.6°C, with Ierapetra close behind at 28.5°C. Overnight minimums here stay above 23°C, making south-facing beaches the most comfortable for early risers. Wave heights along the south reach only 0.22 metres at both Ierapetra and Makrigialos, the flattest seas on the island today.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains, Psiloritis and the Dikti range will run 10 to 15°C cooler than the coast. Clear skies across most of the island mean good visibility for hikers, but walkers should carry a layer and start early to avoid midday heat on exposed terrain.
Sea, Wind and UV
Winds are light island-wide, peaking at 15.5 km/h in Heraklion and staying below 15 km/h everywhere else. Sitia records the largest swell at 0.52 metres, still well within comfortable boating range. Sea temperatures sit between 26.3°C and 26.8°C across all coasts.
UV index reaches 7 across all locations today, rated high. Apply SPF 30 or above, wear sunglasses and a hat, and limit direct exposure between 11:00 and 16:00. At UV 7, unprotected skin can burn in under 30 minutes.
Swim Verdict
Good to excellent conditions for swimming across the whole island. The south coast around Ierapetra and Makrigialos is exceptionally calm. Sitia and Elounda see the most movement at just under 0.5 metres, suitable for all adults but worth noting with young children. Water at 26 to 27°C is warm and comfortable throughout.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you are based in Heraklion and planning a beach morning, the local fog should clear by around 10:00. Driving 20 minutes east to Hersonissos gets you clear skies from the start. Wherever you swim, reapply sunscreen after coming out of the water. UV at 7 is high enough to catch people off guard after a long morning on the beach.
