Island Overview
Sunday 9 August 2026 brings classic high-summer conditions to Crete: clear to mainly clear skies across most of the island, zero precipitation, and temperatures ranging from 28.7°C in Rethymno to 33.5°C in Elounda. The meltemi is active but uneven, which makes location choice matter more than usual today.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast sits in the 29 to 31°C band. Heraklion reaches 30.6°C with winds peaking at 26.8 km/h, keeping conditions on the waterfront manageable. Chania is the coolest spot on the island at 29.8°C with a light 13.7 km/h breeze and some cloud development through the afternoon. Rethymno offers the mildest combination of the day: 28.7°C and a moderate northerly at 20.6 km/h.
The east and south tell a different story. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda both exceed 33°C, with winds near 30 km/h off the Gulf of Mirabello. Ierapetra on the south coast hits 31.9°C with the strongest wind of the day at 41.9 km/h, a solid Beaufort 6 that will drive dust and make beach umbrellas unreliable. Makrigialos, a short drive east, records 32.9°C with a 29.4 km/h onshore breeze.
The Mountains
The White Mountains and Mount Ida offer real relief from coastal heat. At elevations above 1,500 m, temperatures run 12 to 15°C below coastal readings, making midday conditions at Samaria Gorge or the Nida Plateau genuinely comfortable. Start any high-altitude walk before 09:00; valley approaches heat up quickly once the sun clears the ridgelines.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are uniformly warm at 25.5 to 26.7°C across the whole island. North-coast wave heights reach 1.0 to 1.2 m, active but well within safe limits for adult swimmers. The south coast is notably calmer at the surface: Ierapetra peaks at 0.52 m and Makrigialos at 0.70 m, despite the strong wind overhead. UV sits at 8.0 to 8.3 across the entire island, firmly in the very high band, with peak exposure between 11:00 and 16:00 local time.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good for swimming island-wide. The north and east coasts offer livelier surf suited to confident swimmers; sheltered bays on the south coast are calmer for families with children. The main exception is open Ierapetra beach, where 42 km/h onshore winds will throw sand and make prolonged sunbathing uncomfortable even though the water itself remains flat and warm.
Practical Tip for Today
With UV at 8 or above, unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes at midday. Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before leaving your accommodation, reapply after every swim, and plan any outdoor sightseeing for before 11:00 or after 17:00 local time. A wide-brim hat is worth the bag space today.
