Island overview
Clear skies and zero precipitation cover every corner of Crete on 20 July 2026. Daytime highs range from 31°C at Sitia in the far east to 35.4°C at Elounda, with the majority of the island sitting between 32°C and 34°C. The meltemi blows at moderate strength across the eastern gulf while the centre and west see little more than a gentle breeze.
North coast and south coast
The north-facing coastal strip stays lively but manageable. Chania peaks at 33.3°C, Heraklion at 33.7°C, and Rethymno sits coolest at 32.3°C with the lightest wind on the island at 11 km/h. The real heat concentrates in the northeast, where Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda both reach 35°C under a 21 km/h northerly that feels refreshing rather than disruptive.
The south coast tells a different story after dark. Overnight lows in Ierapetra and Makrigialos hold near 25.6°C and 25.8°C, almost four degrees above Heraklion's 21.2°C minimum. The African air mass that warms the south face of the island dissipates slowly, making outdoor dining comfortable but sleeping without air conditioning difficult.
Mountain conditions
The White Mountains above Chania, the Ida massif in the centre, and the Dikti range over Lasithi offer genuine relief from coastal heat. Temperatures at elevations above 1,400 metres run roughly 10 to 15°C cooler than the shore. Hikers still face strong UV and should carry ample water throughout the day.
Sea, wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures reach 27.2°C off Rethymno and stay above 25°C everywhere, including 25.3°C off Sitia. Wave heights are negligible across the island, peaking at just 0.5 metres off Sitia and dropping to 0.26 metres in Ierapetra bay. The UV index ranges from 8.25 to 8.55 at all stations, placing the whole island firmly in the very high band on the WHO scale. The strongest gusts, 21.3 km/h, remain confined to the Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos area.
Swim verdict
Conditions are excellent island-wide. Calm surf, sea temperatures comfortably above 25°C, and no significant currents make this a safe beach day at every coastal location. The northeast gulf near Elounda carries a light chop from the meltemi but nothing that limits swimming. Rethymno and Chania offer the warmest water at 27°C.
Practical tip for today
Reapply SPF 50+ after every swim. With UV above 8 from mid-morning through mid-afternoon, a single morning application is not adequate protection. Plan extended beach time for before 11:00 or after 17:00, and carry at least one litre of water per person for every two hours outdoors.
