Island Overview
Monday 15 June brings settled, sunny conditions across Crete. Every station reports zero precipitation and skies ranging from clear to partly cloudy at a handful of north-central and eastern locations. Afternoon highs reach 26 to 29°C along the coast, with Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda sharing the day's peak at 28.9°C. Heraklion records the coolest morning low at 17.1°C, while Ierapetra stays above 22°C overnight, the warmest baseline on the island.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast, covering Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and the resort strip through Hersonissos and Malia, sees light to moderate northerly winds of 12 to 17 km/h. This generates small but noticeable wave action: heights of 0.84 to 0.98 metres off Heraklion, Hersonissos and Malia. Skies are partly cloudy at those last two resorts, though temperatures remain comfortable in the upper 20s.
The south coast tells a calmer story. Ierapetra and Makrigialos record the mildest wave conditions on the island today at 0.38 and 0.42 metres respectively, with winds below 16 km/h and mainly clear skies all day. Nights on the south coast stay above 20°C throughout.
The Mountains
Inland and at altitude, temperatures drop noticeably. The 17.1°C overnight low at Heraklion reflects cooler air draining off the Dikti and Psiloritis ranges. Hikers heading into the Samaria Gorge or up to the Lasithi Plateau should carry a light layer for the early morning and expect fresher, drier conditions at elevation throughout the day.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures sit between 23.3°C at Sitia and 24.5°C at Rethymno, warm enough for comfortable swimming anywhere on the island. The main exception to the general calm is Sitia, where gusts reach 21.7 km/h and waves build to 1.1 metres, the highest reading on the island today. Those conditions suit experienced swimmers and water-sports users but are worth factoring in if you have young children.
UV peaks at 8.55 in Rethymno, placing the whole island firmly in the very high category. Peak exposure runs from roughly 10:00 to 16:00 local time.
Swim Verdict
The water is warm and inviting across Crete today. The south coast offers the flattest conditions; Ierapetra and Makrigialos are ideal for families and snorkellers. Along the north coast, small swells add a little movement without posing any concern for confident swimmers. Sitia is the one location where stronger wind and choppier surf may unsettle younger bathers, so opt for a sheltered cove there if possible.
Practical Tip for the Day
Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before leaving your accommodation and reapply every 90 minutes. With UV at 8 or above across the entire island, even a short midday walk on exposed ground will produce sunburn faster than most visitors expect. A wide-brim hat and UV-rated sunglasses are not optional today.
