Crete stays dry on 14 June 2026 under a mix of partly cloudy and clear skies. No meaningful rain is expected island-wide; Sitia in the far east may record a trace of 0.2 mm, but nothing that will interrupt plans. Temperatures sit comfortably in the mid-20s, from 24°C in Rethymno and Sitia up to 26.6°C in Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. The dominant weather story today is wind, and where you feel it depends entirely on which coast you are on.
North Coast
Heraklion, Hersonissos, Malia, Rethymno and Chania share partly cloudy skies and highs of 24 to 26°C. Chania is the calmest location on the island today, with peak winds around 14 km/h. Moving east toward Heraklion and the resort towns, breezes pick up to 24 to 25 km/h. Waves along the north coast reach 1.0 to 1.3 metres at exposed beaches, producing a noticeable but moderate swell.
South and East
The south coast is significantly windier. Makrigialos records the highest gusts of the day at 44 km/h, and Ierapetra follows closely at 43 km/h. These are not trivial winds for beach umbrellas and loungers. That said, both locations benefit from clear skies and, counterintuitively, very flat water: wave heights stay below 0.6 metres, sheltered from the northerly swell by the island itself. In the east, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia see gusts of 28 to 34 km/h under mostly clear conditions, with the warmest temperatures on the island.
Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif stay dry throughout the day. Hikers above 1,000 metres should expect temperatures well below coastal readings and carry a windproof layer. Afternoon cloud may reduce visibility across the western summits.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 23.5°C at Sitia to 24.6°C at Rethymno, warm enough for extended swimming without discomfort. UV peaks between 8.25 and 8.55 across all locations, placing the entire island in the high-to-very-high exposure band. Intensity builds from around 10:00 and peaks between 12:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
Good conditions island-wide. The north coast has a light swell of up to 1.3 metres at open beaches, manageable for adults but worth watching around children. The south coast offers unusually flat water despite the wind, making sheltered coves near Ierapetra and Makrigialos an excellent choice today. Sea temperature of 24°C is comfortable across the board.
Practical Tip
Apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving accommodation and reapply after each swim. UV is already significant by mid-morning. If you are heading to the south coast, favour a sheltered cove over an exposed beach: the difference in comfort between a windswept stretch and a bay will be considerable today.
