Outdoor Family Activities in Crete
Crete offers a solid range of things to do with kids across its four regional units — Heraklion, Lasithi, Rethymno, Chania. The island's geography means options shift significantly depending on season and location.
Water parks are the most popular kids attractions in Crete during summer. Watercity Waterpark (Anopolis, 20km east of Heraklion centre) charges approximately €26/adult and €18/child under 12 for a full-day pass. Season runs May to October. Limnoupolis, 5km southeast of Chania, is smaller and better suited to children under 8, with entry around €18/adult and €12/child. Both parks include slides rated by age group and dedicated toddler areas.
For beach days, shallow water entry is the main criterion with young children. Elafonisi, 75km southwest of Chania, has a natural lagoon rarely exceeding 1m in depth — suitable for toddlers. Falasarna, 60km west of Chania, offers wide sandy shores with very gradual entry. Bali Beach on the north coast (45km east of Rethymno) has a protected cove with calm water. For depth data and facilities by beach, see our full guide to Best Family Beaches in Crete 2026.
Glass-bottom boat tours depart from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and Hersonissos between April and October. A 1-hour trip costs €12–€18/person and gives children an accessible view of underwater life. Horseback riding is available near Rethymno (approximately €35/hour for beginners) and on the flat terrain of the Lasithi Plateau — suitable for children aged 5 and up.
