Saint Minas: Patron Saint of Heraklion
Saint Minas (Agios Minas) was an Egyptian-born soldier martyred around 296 AD under Emperor Diocletian. His association with Heraklion deepened over centuries — local tradition credits him with miraculous protection of the city, most notably during the Ottoman period when he reportedly appeared on horseback to halt a plague outbreak that threatened the population.
The Cathedral of Agios Minas in Heraklion is one of the largest churches in Greece. Built between 1862 and 1895, it measures roughly 37 metres long by 27 metres wide and holds up to 8,000 worshippers. It stands on Plateia Agia Aikaterini in the old town, directly beside the original 15th-century chapel of Agios Minas and the Church of Agia Ekaterini — the latter now a Byzantine icon museum housing six works by Michail Damaskinos, a contemporary of El Greco. Entry to the museum costs €4.
The Heraklion Patron Saint Festival: What Happens on November 11
The Agios Minas celebration on November 11 is the most important religious event in Heraklion's annual calendar. It draws residents from across Crete as well as Greek Orthodox pilgrims. The schedule follows a consistent pattern:
- Evening of November 10 — Vespers (Esperinos): The cathedral opens from around 6:00 PM. Candles are distributed at the entrance and the church fills quickly — arrive by 5:45 PM for a place inside the nave.
- Morning of November 11, from 7:00 AM: The main Divine Liturgy begins, officiated by the Archbishop of Crete alongside local clergy. The service runs approximately 3–4 hours.
- Late morning — icon procession: The icon of Saint Minas is carried through the city centre, down 25 Avgoustou Street toward the old Venetian harbour and back through the market district. The procession typically starts around 10:30–11:00 AM and draws crowds lining both sides of the route.
- November 11 is a local public holiday for Heraklion municipality employees. Many shops in the old town close for the morning; some close for the full day. Supermarkets and tourist-facing businesses generally reopen by early afternoon.
The streets around Plateia Agia Aikaterini fill with vendors selling candles, incense, and traditional sweets — kalitsounia (cheese or honey pastries) and loukoumades (honey doughnuts fried to order). The Heraklion November festival atmosphere is communal and unscripted: locals bring elderly relatives, children carry small candles, and the procession moves at a slow, deliberate pace through the narrow streets.
