Island Overview
Clear skies and dry heat define Crete on 8 August 2026. Temperatures peak between 29°C and 33°C across the island, with no rainfall recorded at any station. The meltemi, the seasonal northerly wind that intensifies through August, is the dominant variable today, drawing a clear line between the calmer north coast and windier conditions to the east and south.
North Coast vs South and East
The north coast benefits from light winds. Chania records gusts of just 11 km/h under a clear sky, topping out at 32°C. Rethymno reaches 30°C at 19 km/h. Heraklion sits at 32°C with a 24 km/h breeze and mainly clear conditions. Hersonissos and Malia, further east along the north shore, see some patchy cloud but remain fully dry with highs of 30 to 31°C.
Conditions shift noticeably on the east and south coasts. Ierapetra records the strongest gusts of the day at 39 km/h, while Makrigialos reaches 33 km/h and Sitia 29 km/h. Overnight lows in the south stay high: Ierapetra barely drops below 27.5°C, making for a warm, close night. Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos lead the temperature chart at 32.8°C and 32.7°C respectively.
Mountains and Interior
The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis above Rethymno act as a natural barrier, absorbing much of the northerly flow before it reaches the north coast. Hikers heading into the Samaria Gorge or onto the high plateaus will find temperatures 10 to 12°C cooler than at the coast. Carry an extra layer for exposed ridges in the afternoon wind.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are warm across the island, ranging from 25.5°C at Makrigialos to 26.7°C at Heraklion. Wave heights divide sharply by coast: the south is flat at 0.42m in both Ierapetra and Makrigialos, while the east is livelier, with Sitia at 1.12m and the bay of Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda around 0.96 to 1.0m. The UV index peaks at 8.1 to 8.35 at every station, firmly in the very high category. Peak exposure runs from approximately 11:00 to 15:00 local time.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are good across the island today. South-coast bays are sheltered and flat, ideal for families and young children. The east coast offers more movement: Sitia has the largest waves at 1.12m, manageable for most adult swimmers but worth noting for cautious bathers. Windsurfers and kitesurfers should head to Ierapetra or Makrigialos, where strong consistent wind meets flat, shallow water.
Practical Tip for the Day
With the UV index above 8 at every station, sun protection is not optional. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher before reaching the beach and reapply after each swim. Seek shade or wear a cover-up between noon and 15:00, when radiation is at its peak. If hiking or walking a coastal trail, carry water: the combination of heat, wind, and direct sun accelerates dehydration faster than most visitors expect.
