Island Overview

Ierapetra records gusts up to 19 km/h and Makrigialos up to 25.3 km/h, with Sitia seeing the strongest winds on the island at 24.9 km/h. Despite the breeze, the day stays dry throughout, and temperatures hold solid in the low-to-mid twenties.
Mountain Conditions
The central ranges, Psiloritis above Rethymno and the White Mountains above Chania, will carry low cloud for most of the day. Visibility on higher trails will be limited, and temperatures drop noticeably compared to the coast. No precipitation is forecast at altitude, but hikers heading above 1,000 metres should carry an extra layer. Gorges and foothills will feel cooler and darker than the shoreline.
Sea, Wind, and UV
Sea temperatures remain excellent for late September, ranging from 25.1°C at Makrigialos to 26.1°C off Heraklion. Wave heights are low to very low across most of the island, as calm as 0.24m at Ierapetra and 0.38m at Rethymno. The east coast sees slightly more swell, reaching 0.96m at Sitia and 0.84m at Agios Nikolaos, both within normal limits. UV levels sit between 6.3 and 6.6 across all locations. Despite the overcast skies, this moderate-to-high UV range is sufficient to cause sunburn.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are good to very good across Crete today. Sea temperatures above 25°C are warm and inviting for late September. Waves are gentle at most beaches, particularly along the south coast and the western north coast. The east coast around Sitia sees the liveliest swell at just under 1 metre, suitable for confident swimmers but worth noting for families with young children. Chania's beaches are among the calmest on the island today.

UV levels of 6 or above penetrate cloud cover effectively. Apply SPF 30 or higher before heading out, even when direct sun is not visible. This applies at the beach and while walking in town. Reapply after every swim.
