Island Overview

North vs South
The north coast delivers temperatures in the low-to-mid 30s by afternoon with moderate winds. Heraklion comes in slightly cooler at 30.6°C with winds of 23 km/h, while Chania edges to the hottest daytime reading on the island at 33.3°C.
The south coast is warmer overnight: Ierapetra records a minimum of 27.4°C, the highest floor temperature on the island, meaning nights there offer little respite from the heat. The trade-off is wind. Ierapetra sees the strongest gusts today at 34.2 km/h, enough to put sand in motion on exposed beaches. Makrigialos is not far behind at 29.6 km/h.
East Coast
The eastern stretch from Ag. Nikolaos through Elounda and down to Sitia runs in the 26 to 28 km/h wind range. Sitia has the coolest sea surface today at 25.9°C, while Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda share a 26.6°C reading. All four locations are under mainly clear or clear skies with highs between 31°C and 33°C.
Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno offer meaningful relief from the coastal heat. Temperatures drop roughly 6 to 8°C per 1,000 metres of altitude. The partly cloudy signal over Rethymno suggests some cumulus building above the high ridges during the afternoon, but no precipitation is forecast at any elevation today.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 25.9°C at Sitia to 27.6°C off Rethymno. Waves are low across most of the island. The calmest conditions are at Rethymno (0.58m) and Ierapetra (0.66m). Bathers at Malia and Hersonissos should expect a slight chop rather than flat calm. No conditions today indicate any reason to stay out of the water.

A UV index of 8 or above causes sunburn in under 20 minutes on unprotected skin.
