Island Overview
Tuesday 27 October brings a divided picture across Crete. The island sits under broad cloud cover, with active precipitation on the northwest coast and an isolated thunderstorm cell on the far southeast. Despite the grey skies, temperatures remain mild for late October, ranging from 20 to 21.5°C at sea level, and the sea holds at a warm 22°C island-wide.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast draws the worst of the weather today. Chania and Rethymno are both reporting light rain showers, with accumulations under 1 mm in each city. Heraklion starts the morning under fog rather than rain; it should thin as the day progresses. Hersonissos and Malia are dry but overcast, with highs around 20°C. Beach conditions along the entire north coast are uninviting.
The east and south coasts are substantially drier. Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia are overcast but rain-free, with the highest UV readings on the island at 4.6 to 4.8. Ierapetra is the warmest point today at 21.5°C and sees no precipitation. The notable exception is Makrigialos, where a thunderstorm is delivering 2.8 mm of rain. The cell appears localised, but drivers on the south coastal road this afternoon should allow extra time.
Mountain Conditions
At altitude, temperatures drop well below coastal values. The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Ida above Rethymno are likely wrapped in low cloud given the north coast pattern. Anyone planning gorge walks or high-altitude routes should carry a waterproof layer and check local trail conditions before setting out.
Sea State, Wind and UV
The sea temperature is 22.1 to 22.4°C across the island, which is genuinely warm for the final week of October. Winds are light everywhere, peaking at 14 km/h in Chania and falling below 10 km/h around Sitia. Wave heights are low along the north and east coasts, ranging from 0.18 m at Agios Nikolaos to 0.88 m at Chania. The south coast is choppier: both Ierapetra and Makrigialos are recording waves up to 1.06 m, manageable but noticeably more active than the sheltered east.
UV peaks at 4 today, a moderate level consistent with mid-autumn. Sun protection is worth applying between noon and 3 pm, especially in the east where cloud cover is thinner.
Swim Verdict
The water temperature makes swimming a real option. Conditions are best on the east coast: Elounda, Agios Nikolaos, and Sitia all offer calm water, no rain, and the warmest air temperatures on the island. Avoid the water entirely at Makrigialos due to the active thunderstorm. North coast beaches at Chania and Rethymno are technically swimmable but grey skies and light rain make them unappealing. Best choice today: east Crete.
Practical Tip for the Day
If your itinerary is flexible, base yourself in Lasithi prefecture. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda offer the driest and calmest conditions on the island today, with warm sea, light winds, and no rain in the forecast. Pack a light jacket for the evening: temperatures in the east fall to around 14°C after sunset.
