Island Overview
A blanket of cloud covers Crete this Thursday, but conditions are dry and warm island-wide. Daytime highs range from 23.5°C in Ierapetra to 27.9°C in Heraklion, and not a millimetre of rain is forecast for any region. This is classic late-October shoulder weather: temperatures holding well, the light soft, and the summer crowds long gone. October regularly delivers a run of these grey-but-pleasant days before the autumn rains arrive in earnest.
North vs South
The northern coast runs warmer today. Heraklion tops the island at 27.9°C, Hersonissos follows at 27.6°C, and Chania reaches 27.5°C. Rethymno comes in slightly lower at 25.9°C. The south coast is cooler by three to four degrees: Ierapetra peaks at 23.5°C and Makrigialos at 23.9°C. Overnight lows tell a different story. The south stays mild, holding above 17°C after dark, while Heraklion and Sitia will drop closer to 14°C. If you are moving between coasts today, pack accordingly.
The Mountains
With overcast skies persisting across the island, both the White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis in the central massif will be wrapped in cloud for most of the day. Anyone heading above 1,000 metres should expect low visibility and temperatures noticeably cooler than on the coast. Pack extra layers and check trail conditions before you set off.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures remain genuinely inviting for late October, ranging from 22.3°C off Rethymno to 23.0°C at Ierapetra. Wave heights are negligible everywhere, topping out at 0.46 metres off Chania and under 0.30 metres at all other locations. Wind is the one variable to watch on the north coast: Heraklion and Rethymno are recording gusts up to 24 km/h, enough to stir up chop on exposed beaches. Chania, Malia and Sitia are significantly calmer today. UV peaks at a moderate index of 5 across the island. Even under full cloud cover, that is enough to cause redness on fair skin, so apply sunscreen before heading out.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good for a swim at most locations. The water is warm, flat and clear. If the wind is a nuisance near Heraklion or Rethymno, a sheltered cove or a move to the south coast will give you calmer water. The best pairing of warmth and calm today is along the east coast around Elounda, Ag. Nikolaos and Ierapetra.
Practical Tip for the Day
Bring a light jacket for the evening. The gap between the afternoon high and the overnight low reaches 14 degrees in Heraklion today. A terrace lunch will be comfortable in a t-shirt, but outdoor dining after 8 pm will feel noticeably cool. One layer in your bag costs nothing and will earn its place before the night is out.
