Island Overview
A front moving in from the northwest is pushing light rain showers across most of the north coast today while the south and east remain dry under a thick lid of cloud. Temperatures are mild island-wide: 17°C along the north coast, just over 20°C in the south. This is standard mid-October Crete. The summer crowds are gone, the sea is still holding warmth, and the mountains are beginning to catch moisture.
North vs South
The north coast takes the brunt of today's front. Chania accumulates around 5mm of rain, Rethymno 3.8mm, Hersonissos 2.2mm, and Heraklion 0.9mm. All four cities report intermittent light showers with winds of 17 to 24 km/h. UV stays low throughout, peaking at 3.3 in Chania. The south tells a different story: Ierapetra and Makrigialos reach 20 to 21°C with no rain, though wind is stronger there, gusting to 35 km/h at Ierapetra and 28 km/h at Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda. Sitia is the lone wet spot on the east coast, with 1.8mm of light rain and winds up to 32 km/h.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania, Psiloritis above Rethymno, and the Dikti range above the Lasithi Plateau are absorbing today's frontal moisture at altitude. Hikes above 1,000 metres are not recommended without waterproof gear and warm layers. Mountain roads on the approaches to Lasithi and along the Sfakia gorge routes will be slick. Verify local conditions before driving or hiking in the high interior.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are holding well at 22.5 to 23.4°C island-wide. Wave heights range from 1.2m in the sheltered Gulf of Mirabello to 1.7m off Chania, placing open-water conditions in the moderate bracket. Wind is the dominant factor today, particularly along the east coast where gusts reach 32 to 35 km/h. UV index is low in the north (2.1 to 3.3) and moderate in the south, peaking at 5.35 in Ierapetra, worth applying sunscreen for extended outdoor time.
Swim Verdict
Sea temperature is genuinely comfortable throughout the island. The limiting factor today is chop and wind rather than cold water. Best conditions are on the south coast from Makrigialos to Elounda: dry skies, sea above 23°C, and wave heights under 1.3m. The north coast is wet and breezy; swimming is possible in sheltered coves but not at its best. Avoid exposed north-facing beaches, particularly around Chania Bay, in the afternoon when wind typically builds.
Practical Tip for Today
A morning in Heraklion paired with an afternoon drive east toward Ag. Nikolaos or Elounda is a good combination today: you drive out of the rain into dry, breezy conditions as you head east. Pack one layer for the north coast and leave it in the car on arrival in the south. For any mountain crossings, the coastal E75 route stays drier than inland roads through the Psiloritis foothills.
