Island Overview
Crete on 14 September 2026 shows a clear north-south split. North Coast

Chania has the most unsettled picture: 0.3 mm of rain overnight, a showery morning sky and a muggy overnight low of 23.6°C, with a top of 27°C. Rethymno matches that rainfall total, stays overcast and reaches 26°C. Hersonissos and Malia are dry but heavy with cloud, both peaking around 27°C.
East and South Coast
From Agios Nikolaos eastward to Sitia, conditions are dry and partly cloudy. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda reach 27.8°C with a brisk wind of 16.7 km/h. The south coast is the day's standout. Makrigialos reaches 28.8°C under mainly clear skies with a gentle 14 km/h breeze. Ierapetra is close behind at 28.6°C with a stronger 19.6 km/h wind and partly cloudy conditions.
Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno are cloud-capped this morning. Expect reduced visibility on high roads and at gorge trailheads. Conditions improve east of Heraklion, with the Lasithi Plateau sitting under lighter, partly cloudy skies.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are at late-summer peak across the island, ranging from 26.1°C at Sitia to 26.7°C at Heraklion and Rethymno. Waves are small everywhere, topping out at 0.72 m off Chania and under 0.5 m elsewhere. Wind is light to moderate, 14 to 17 km/h in most areas, with Ierapetra the gustiest at 19.6 km/h. UV sits between 6.85 and 7.05 across all stations. Cloud cover reduces but does not block UV: protection is necessary throughout the day.
Swim Verdict
Good to excellent island-wide. Sea temperature holds at 26 to 27°C and seas are flat, with no significant swell. In Chania, morning showers may interrupt beach time but an afternoon improvement is likely. The south coast, especially Makrigialos, offers the most reliable swimming conditions today.
Practical Tip for 14 September
If you are on the north coast and the cloud has not cleared by mid-morning, a short drive south via the Sfakia or Agia Galini road delivers you to a notably different day. The journey takes under an hour. Wherever you are, apply SPF: a UV index above 6 means meaningful exposure even under overcast skies.
