Island Overview
Crete divides clearly on 16 August 2026. A layer of cloud sits across the north coast from Malia and Hersonissos through Heraklion to Rethymno and Chania, holding afternoon highs between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius. The south and east, from Ierapetra and Makrigialos up to Elounda and Agios Nikolaos, wake under clear skies with temperatures reaching 29 degrees. The island is effectively dry; Chania and Rethymno log a trace of 0.1 mm each, not enough to affect any outdoor plans.
North Versus South
Overcast skies in the north suppress UV at Hersonissos and Malia to a relatively low 4.9, but Chania under similar cloud records 8.0, the day's island high. Cloud does not mean burn-proof here. Ierapetra at 29 degrees is the warmest city today, with Agios Nikolaos and Elounda close behind at 28.6. The south coast sits sheltered from the meltemi, keeping temperatures one to two degrees above the north.
Wind and the Mountains
The meltemi is running. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda gust to 39 km/h, Sitia and Ierapetra to 31 km/h, and Rethymno to 28 km/h. These are fresh breeze conditions on the Beaufort scale, noticeable at any exposed north or east-facing beach. Psiloritis and the Lefka Ori channel the northerly flow through the eastern bays. Hikers on high trails should expect strong gusts above 1,000 metres and carry an extra layer.
Sea State and UV
North-coast wave heights reach 1.72 metres at Malia and 1.68 metres at Hersonissos, with Chania and Heraklion close behind. Paddleboards and inflatable toys are a poor choice at these beaches today. The south coast is a different picture: Ierapetra sits at just 0.36 metres and Makrigialos at 0.56 metres, both calm and protected by the Libyan Sea geography. Sea temperatures are warm island-wide, ranging from 25.6 to 26.8 degrees Celsius. UV averages around 7 across the island, which the WHO classifies as high. Sunscreen is necessary today regardless of cloud cover.
Swim Verdict
The south coast wins today. Calm water, clear skies, and sea temperatures around 26 degrees make Ierapetra, Makrigialos, and the beaches between them the standout swimming spots. North-coast beaches are manageable for confident adults but expect persistent chop and spray. Check flag conditions at organised beaches on arrival; yellow or orange flags are likely at several north-coast spots given the swell heights.
Practical Tip
If the north-coast swell puts you off, the drive south from Heraklion over the Asterousia mountains takes 45 to 60 minutes and delivers flat water and full sun. Whichever coast you choose, drink water steadily through the afternoon, reapply sunscreen after each swim, and be aware that even a moderate meltemi will dry skin and dehydrate faster than you expect.
