Island Overview
Crete on 15 August 2026 splits cleanly between a cloudy north and a sunny south. The meltemi is running hard in the east, pushing gusts above 40 km/h from Agios Nikolaos to Ierapetra. No rain is expected anywhere on the island. Temperatures peak between 24.6°C in Sitia and 28.2°C in Elounda, and warm overnight lows above 22°C mean no relief from the heat after dark.
North Coast: Overcast but Warm
Heraklion, Rethymno, Hersonissos and Malia all wake under overcast skies. The cloud cover is high rather than stormy, but UV levels still reach 7.4 to 7.8 and sunscreen remains essential. Winds peak at 27 to 31 km/h and are pushing waves of 1.52 to 1.84 metres along the northern shore, with Malia the choppiest at 1.84 metres. Chania is the exception: partly cloudy, winds of only 15 km/h, and sea at 26.4°C, making it the best option on the north coast today.
South and East: Sunshine with a Meltemi Edge
Ierapetra and Makrigialos are the standout destinations today. Both enjoy clear skies, the warmest sea temperatures on the island (27.0°C at Ierapetra), and calm waves of 0.52 and 0.88 metres respectively. The meltemi reaches 32 to 41 km/h, noticeable on exposed beaches, but the small swell keeps swimming conditions acceptable for most visitors.
Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia share mainly clear to partly cloudy skies but take the full force of the meltemi at 42 to 44 km/h. Waves sit between 1.46 and 1.72 metres. Conditions are manageable for confident swimmers but expect significant surface drift and spray.
Mountains and Interior
Temperatures across the Lefka Ori and Psiloritis will run 4 to 6 degrees below coastal readings. The cloud layer pressing against the north-facing slopes may thicken through midday. Hikers on gorge or ridge trails should carry a light layer and expect gusty conditions above 1,000 metres.
Sea Conditions, UV and Swim Verdict
Sea surface temperatures range from 25.8°C to 27.0°C across the island. UV peaks at 8.1 in Rethymno, firmly in the high category. Apply SPF 30 or above, reapply after time in the water, and seek shade between noon and 16:00. Swim verdict: the south coast wins today. Ierapetra delivers calm, clear-sky, warm-water conditions with minimal swell. The north is swimmable but choppy. The east is best left to strong swimmers given the wind-driven drift.
Practical Tip for 15 August
Today is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of the most observed public holidays in Greece. Beaches, tavernas and roads will be at peak capacity. Leave for the beach before 09:00 or after 14:00 to avoid the worst congestion. If you are based on the north coast and want calm water with sunshine, the drive south toward Ierapetra is well worth it today.
