Island overview
Crete opens 6 August 2026 with clear to mainly clear skies across all regions, zero rainfall recorded or expected, and daytime highs ranging from 28.8°C in Rethymno to 33.2°C in Elounda. The meltemi is blowing along the north coast, as is normal for August, but conditions remain comfortable and the sea is warm and accessible everywhere on the island.
North coast versus south coast
Wind is the sharpest difference between the two shores today. The north coast is taking the meltemi most directly: Heraklion sees gusts to 23 km/h, while Hersonissos and Malia reach 19 km/h. Rethymno and Chania are more sheltered, recording 18 km/h and 14 km/h respectively. This keeps daytime temperatures a degree or two below the east and south, but raises light surface chop on exposed beaches.
The south coast is a different picture. Ierapetra and Makrigialos sit almost out of the wind, with gusts under 10 km/h and wave heights at just 0.32 m, the flattest sea on the island today. Overnight temperatures on the south shore stay above 24°C, so there is no real cool-down after dark, but daytime conditions are notably calmer and more sheltered than the north.
East Crete: today's hot spot
Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda top the temperature chart at 33.1°C and 33.2°C respectively. Sheltered by geography from the prevailing wind, both towns record gusts below 10 km/h. Sea temperature in the Gulf of Mirabello reaches 26°C with wave heights under 0.8 m. This is the hottest and calmest corner of Crete today.
Mountain conditions
The Lefka Ori above Chania and the Psiloritis massif inland of Rethymno are completely dry. Hiking is feasible but only if you start before 8 am. Above 1,500 m, exposed ridges will be harsh by midday under a UV index approaching 8.4. Carry more water than you expect to need.
Sea state, wind, and UV
Sea temperatures sit between 25.5°C at Sitia and 26.6°C near Ierapetra. Wave heights peak at 0.84 m along the central north coast and fall to 0.32 m on the south shore. UV index ranges from 8.1 to 8.35 island-wide, which the World Meteorological Organisation classifies as very high. Peak exposure falls between 11 am and 4 pm local time.
Swim verdict
Good swimming conditions across all of Crete today. The south coast offers the flattest, calmest water. North coast beaches have light surface chop from the meltemi but nothing that prevents comfortable recreational swimming. Sea temperatures of 25.5 to 26.6°C are ideal. Snorkellers, paddleboarders, and families with young children will all find suitable spots regardless of which coast they are on.
Practical tip for the day
Apply high-factor sunscreen before you leave your accommodation, not when you arrive at the beach. With UV above 8 across the whole island, unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes around midday. Re-apply after every swim. A break indoors or in deep shade between noon and 4 pm is strongly advisable, particularly for children and fair-skinned visitors.
