Island Overview
Crete opens 4 August 2026 under clear to mainly clear skies from Chania to Sitia. Zero precipitation is recorded across all ten monitored stations. Temperatures peak between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius, sea water sits between 25 and 27 degrees, and there is no weather risk on the horizon. This is peak Cretan summer in its standard form: dry, sunny, and hot.
North vs South
The north coast runs cooler today. Chania reaches 30°C, Rethymno 29°C, and Heraklion 31°C, with overnight lows settling in the low 20s. The south coast is a different proposition. Ierapetra records a minimum of 27.1°C and Makrigialos holds at 26.3°C through the night, making for warm, sticky sleeping conditions. Afternoon highs in the far east push further: Agios Nikolaos and Elounda both approach 34°C, the warmest readings on the island today.
Mountain Relief
Hikers heading into the White Mountains above Chania or onto the Psiloritis plateau above Rethymno will find temperatures several degrees lower than at sea level. Conditions are stable and fully dry, with no risk of afternoon storms. Trails above 1,000 metres offer genuine relief for those who find the coastal heat excessive.
Sea, Wind and UV
Wind is the main variable today. The east end of the island is the windiest: Agios Nikolaos and Elounda record gusts reaching 26.8 km/h, enough to raise a light chop on east-facing beaches. The central and western coast is noticeably calmer, with Chania at 14 km/h and Rethymno at 15 km/h. Wave heights confirm this pattern: the sheltered south at Ierapetra and Makrigialos sees just 0.26 metres, while Sitia in the northeast records the day's highest swell at 0.84 metres. Sea temperatures are uniformly warm, ranging from 25.3°C at Sitia to 26.7°C at Rethymno. The UV index sits between 8.1 and 8.4 across all stations, placing the entire island in the very high category throughout midday hours.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent for swimming across Crete today. The sea is warm, waves are small everywhere, and there are no weather hazards. The south coast near Ierapetra and Makrigialos offers the flattest water, with near-calm conditions. Swimmers at east-facing beaches around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos will encounter a light afternoon northerly and a modest chop, but nothing that affects safety or enjoyment.
Tip for the Day
A UV index above 8 means unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes. Apply SPF 50 before leaving and reapply after every swim. Avoid unprotected exposure between noon and 16:00, particularly in the east where 34°C heat and full sun combine. Carry more water than you think you need.
