Island Overview
Crete opens July with a clean sweep: zero precipitation across all ten reporting stations, skies ranging from mainly clear to clear, and afternoon highs between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius. It is a straightforward summer day with no significant weather events expected anywhere on the island.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast is the windier side today. Heraklion records gusts up to 23 km/h and Chania reaches 20 km/h, consistent with the early Meltemi pattern that builds through July. Sea temperatures along the northern shore sit at 25 degrees Celsius. Conditions are comfortable for beach activities, with enough breeze to keep seafront areas pleasant. Hersonissos and Malia both report 15 km/h.
The south and far-east coasts are noticeably calmer. Ierapetra, Makrigialos, and Sitia all report winds below 18 km/h, with several stations under 13. The Libyan Sea holds temperatures between 24.3 and 25.5 degrees, and the highest waves on the south coast reach 0.70 metres near Ierapetra.
Eastern Crete
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda share the day's highest temperature at 33.7 degrees Celsius. The sheltered Gulf of Mirabello produces lighter winds and pronounced afternoon heat. Visitors planning to explore archaeological sites or exposed hillsides in the east should finish outdoor activity before 10 a.m. or resume after 5 p.m.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis range inland of Rethymno will run 12 to 15 degrees cooler than the coast. The Samaria Gorge descent begins in cooler air near 1,200 metres but ends at sea level in Agia Roumeli where afternoon heat accumulates quickly. Carry at least two litres of water per person for any gorge or mountain trail today.
UV and Sea Conditions
UV peaks at 8.7 in Rethymno and sits between 8.4 and 8.7 at every station island-wide. This is classified as high: unprotected skin can burn within 15 to 20 minutes around midday. SPF 30 or above, a hat, and shade between noon and 4 p.m. are necessary precautions. Sea temperatures range from 24.3 degrees at Sitia to 26.0 degrees at Rethymno, with the warmest water currently found along the central north coast.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good for swimming at every coast. Wave heights are below one metre at all stations. The calmest water is at Rethymno (0.34 m) and Agios Nikolaos (0.46 m). Slight chop appears near Ierapetra (0.70 m) and Malia (0.66 m), both well within comfortable range for most swimmers. All sea temperatures are above 24 degrees.
Practical Tip
Today is the first day of July and peak-season crowds arrive with it. At north-coast resorts from Heraklion to Hersonissos, popular beach car parks are at capacity by 9 a.m. Arriving before 8:30 a.m. secures a good spot and gives you the calmer morning sea before the afternoon Meltemi strengthens. Alternatively, ask locally about less-accessed coves reachable by boat or a short walk from the road.
