Back to newsA minor earthquake of magnitude 2.8 struck approximately 22 km north-northeast of Kissamos, in northwestern Crete, on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 11:50 am local time (GMT+3). Kissamos is a coastal town on the Chania regional unit, near popular destinations such as the Gramvousa Peninsula and Balos Lagoon.
At magnitude 2.8, this is a very small seismic event. Earthquakes of this size are generally not felt by people and cause no damage to buildings or infrastructure. There are no reported impacts on roads, ferries, or tourist sites in the area.
No action is required for visitors. Travel to and around Kissamos and nearby attractions can continue as normal.
