Back to newsGreek health authorities are warning that sunglasses are not a simple consumer product but a medical protective device against ultraviolet radiation, and that choosing the wrong lenses can cause serious eye damage, particularly in children. Parents are advised to seek guidance from an optician or ophthalmologist when selecting sunglasses for their kids rather than buying cheap, unregulated pairs. For tourists visiting Crete, where UV levels are significantly higher than in northern Europe, this is especially relevant during summer months. Look for sunglasses labeled CE and UV400, which confirm they block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays. Avoid purchasing unbranded sunglasses from street markets or souvenir shops, as these may darken the lens without filtering UV light, causing pupils to dilate and increasing radiation exposure to the eye.
