Back to newsThe Mediterranean Sea around Crete is at its warmest during the summer months, with water temperatures in July typically reaching 24 to 26 degrees Celsius. Visitors can expect comfortable swimming conditions along all major coastal areas, including the north coast beaches near Heraklion and Chania, as well as the calmer southern shores such as Matala and Plakias. The Libyan Sea on the south coast tends to be slightly warmer than the northern Aegean side. These temperatures are ideal for snorkeling and water sports. Sea conditions remain generally calm in July, though afternoon winds, known locally as the meltemi, can occasionally affect northern beaches. Swimmers are advised to check local beach flags before entering the water. Most organized beaches have lifeguard coverage during peak summer hours.
