Back to newsCrete is on high fire alert, with three of its regional units currently classified at danger level 4 out of 5 on the official fire risk scale. This elevated risk applies to significant portions of the island and is typically driven by strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation common during the summer months.
Tourists visiting Crete should avoid lighting fires, using barbecues, or discarding cigarettes in or near forested and rural areas. Open-air fires are prohibited during high-risk periods under Greek law. If you observe smoke or fire, call the emergency number 199 (Fire Service) immediately.
When hiking or exploring nature areas, stay on marked trails and check the daily fire risk map at civilprotection.gr before heading out. Local authorities may restrict access to certain forest zones during peak alert days.
