57 Crete Farmers Convicted in EU Subsidy Fraud

Friday, 26 June 2026/SourceKeep Talking Greece/1 min read
A Greek misdemeanor court has convicted 57 of 58 farmers from Crete in a case involving fraudulent agricultural subsidy claims. The defendants were found guilty of submitting false land declarations for plots located in northern Greece to OPEKEPE, the Greek Agricultural Payments Authority, in order to unlawfully collect EU farming subsidies. The court applied a three-member panel process standard for this category of financial misconduct. One defendant was acquitted. This case is part of broader efforts by Greek authorities to crack down on subsidy fraud within the agricultural sector. The convictions carry no direct impact on tourism or travel to Crete. Visitors to the island will not encounter any disruption related to this ruling. Agricultural activity on Crete continues normally, and the island's farms, olive groves, and vineyards remain open and accessible to tourists as usual.
