Back to newsThe Region of Crete has formally requested the immediate launch of a pilot program to combat the growing presence of the pufferfish (Lagocephalos sceleratus) in Cretan waters. Known locally as the "marine scourge," this invasive species has spread significantly across the Eastern Mediterranean and poses a serious risk to human health, as its flesh and organs contain a potent toxin with no known antidote.
The regional authority is pushing for coordinated action including targeted fishing campaigns and removal efforts. For tourists, the key takeaway is clear: do not eat pufferfish under any circumstances, even if offered at a local market or caught while fishing. The fish is easy to recognize by its round, spiny body. If you spot one on the beach or in the water, leave it alone and notify local authorities.
