Back to newsThe silver-cheeked toadfish (lagocephalos), an invasive and highly toxic species, has been spotted at several beaches across Greece, including locations in Crete. This fish contains a powerful poison with no antidote and is extremely dangerous if handled or consumed. Greek authorities and the Fisheries Ministry have issued warnings asking beachgoers and swimmers not to touch the fish if encountered in the water or washed ashore. If you see one on the beach, do not approach it and alert local authorities or beach staff immediately. Fishermen are also advised not to eat any catch of this species. The fish is identifiable by its rounded body and beak-like mouth. Awareness is the key precaution: enjoy the sea normally, but report any sightings to beach personnel right away.
