Meltemi Wind Brings Heat Relief to Greece, But Churns Up Seas

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Meltemi, a strong seasonal northerly wind typical of Aegean summers, is currently moderating the ongoing heatwave affecting Crete and mainland Greece, according to meteorologist Mihalis Karakatsanis. The wind is bringing lower temperatures and drier air compared to the intense heat of recent days. While the Meltemi offers welcome relief from the heat on land, visitors should be aware that it can cause choppy to rough sea conditions, particularly on northern and eastern coasts of Crete. Ferry services and boat excursions may experience delays or cancellations during strong Meltemi episodes. Tourists are advised to check sea conditions before booking day trips to nearby islands or water activities. Inland areas and south-facing beaches tend to be more sheltered. The cooler conditions are expected to continue in the short term before summer heat resumes.
