Back to newsCrete is experiencing classic summer conditions, with temperatures climbing to 29-32°C across the island. Northern winds (Meltemi) are blowing at up to 8 Beaufort, which is strong enough to create rough sea conditions and affect ferry and boat services.
Tourists should check ferry schedules before travelling between islands or to the mainland, as crossings may be delayed or cancelled. Beach days remain enjoyable, but swimmers should exercise caution at exposed northern and eastern coastlines where waves can be significant. Sheltered southern beaches such as those around Matala or Paleochora offer calmer alternatives during strong Meltemi periods.
Stay hydrated, use high-SPF sunscreen, and plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat. Shade is limited at many archaeological sites, so carry water and a hat.
