Chania's Historic Market at Center of Ownership Dispute

Thursday, 14 May 2026/Haniotika Nea/1
The Municipal Market of Chania (Dimotiki Agora), located in the heart of the old town, is at the center of a local governance dispute. Mayor P. Simandirakis publicly stated that the market belongs to the municipality, not to the individual vendors operating inside it, in response to formal objections submitted by the market's traders. The market, a landmark cross-shaped building dating to 1913, houses around 70 stalls selling local products including cheese, olive oil, spices, honey, and fresh produce. It remains fully open to visitors during this dispute. For tourists, this is one of the best places in Chania to buy authentic Cretan goods and experience daily local life. No disruptions to visiting hours or vendor access have been reported. The outcome may affect future lease conditions for vendors, but no immediate changes are expected.
