Fishermen are being financially incentivized to catch and report the fish as part of a broader effort to control its population. The lagocephalus sceleratus contains tetrodotoxin, a powerful poison found in its skin, liver, and organs, which makes it dangerous if handled or consumed. There is no antidote. Tourists should never purchase or eat this fish from any vendor, and if spotted in the water it should not be touched.
