Back to newsBalos Beach, located on the northwestern tip of Crete near the Gramvousa Peninsula, has been ranked the third best beach in Europe for 2026. Known for its shallow turquoise lagoon, white sand, and dramatic backdrop of rocky cliffs, Balos attracts visitors from across the continent each summer. The beach is accessible by boat from Kissamos port, with daily ferry services running during the tourist season, or by a 4WD vehicle followed by a 20-minute walk down a rocky path. Facilities on site are limited, so visitors should bring water, food, and sun protection. Crowds peak between July and August, so arriving early or visiting in late May, June, or September is recommended for a quieter experience. The recognition is expected to increase visitor numbers significantly in 2026.
