Back to newsChania will host the 84th Panhellenic Mountaineering Gathering from July 17 to 19, bringing together hikers and climbing enthusiasts from across Greece. The event features two main activities: an ascent of Mount Gingilos, reaching 2,080 meters, and a traverse of the famous Samaria Gorge. Both routes are located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) area of western Crete, one of the island's most scenic and rugged landscapes.
Tourists interested in hiking may notice increased trail activity and larger groups on these routes during those dates. The Samaria Gorge is one of Crete's most popular day hikes and is open to the public, so independent visitors can join at their own pace. The gorge trail runs approximately 16 kilometers and typically takes 4 to 6 hours to complete. Booking shuttle transport from Chania in advance is recommended during peak season.
