Back to newsA rental car caught fire and was completely destroyed on the BOAK highway near Chania, in western Crete. The tourists traveling in the vehicle escaped unharmed. Temporary disruption to traffic on that stretch of the BOAK is possible while the scene was cleared. Tourists renting vehicles in Crete are advised to familiarise themselves with their rental company's emergency contact number and roadside assistance procedures before setting out, and to pull safely off the road at the first sign of any mechanical issue or smoke.
