Crete's Mount Psiloritis Gets Protection Push From Parliament

Wednesday, 29 April 2026/Flashnews/1
The Mayor of Mylopotamos, Giorgos Klados, has proposed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the Greek Parliament focused on protecting and promoting Mount Psiloritis, also known as Mount Ida, the highest peak in Crete at 2,456 metres. The memorandum aims to establish a coordinated plan bringing together local authorities, regional bodies, and national institutions to preserve the mountain's natural environment and cultural heritage while increasing its visibility as a destination. Psiloritis is a UNESCO Global Geopark and holds deep significance in Cretan mythology as the birthplace of Zeus. For visitors, this initiative signals growing investment in hiking infrastructure, guided trails, and conservation efforts around the mountain. Those interested in trekking or exploring the Nida Plateau and the Ideon Cave should monitor developments, as improved facilities and signage may follow from this cooperation agreement.
