Back to newsMembers and friends of the Historical, Folkloric and Archaeological Society of Crete (ILAEK) recently visited two of Heraklion's most significant landmarks: the Historical Museum of Crete and the Koules Fortress. Both sites are located in the city center and are accessible to independent visitors year-round.
The Historical Museum of Crete covers the island's history from early Christian times through the 20th century, including notable works by El Greco. The Koules Fortress, a Venetian-era sea castle at the entrance of Heraklion's old harbor, offers views over the waterfront and well-preserved fortification architecture.
Tourists visiting Heraklion can combine both sites in a single day. The museum is located inland near the waterfront boulevard, while Koules sits at the harbor mouth, a short walk away. Entrance fees apply at both locations.
