Back to newsPlans are underway to restore and promote the iconic windmills of the Lassithi Plateau in eastern Crete. The plateau, located in the Lasithi regional unit at around 840 metres elevation, is home to hundreds of traditional white-sailed windmills that were historically used to pump water for agriculture. The restoration initiative aims to rehabilitate these structures and improve their visibility as a cultural landmark. For visitors, the Lassithi Plateau is already a popular day trip from Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos, roughly a one-hour drive. Once restoration progresses, the site is expected to offer a more complete heritage experience. The plateau also houses the Dikteon Cave, said to be the birthplace of Zeus, making it a worthwhile combined visit for those exploring inland Crete.
