Back to newsThe Lasithi region in eastern Crete offers some of the island's most striking beaches, often compared to Caribbean scenery. Key spots include Vai, home to Europe's largest natural palm forest leading to a sheltered sandy beach, and Chrysi (Golden Island), an uninhabited islet reachable by boat from Ierapetra, known for its shallow turquoise waters and white sand. Makrys Gialos is a well-organised beach with facilities near Ierapetra, suitable for families. Xerokampos, further east near Zakros, remains quieter and less developed, appealing to visitors seeking more remote surroundings. All four locations are accessible by car or local boat services during the summer season. Lasithi is roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Heraklion. Visitors planning to reach Chrysi should check seasonal boat schedules from Ierapetra harbour before travelling.
