Europe Phases Out ATMs, Shifts to Retail Cashback for Cash Access

Tuesday, 21 April 2026/CretaOne/1
Europe is moving toward new methods for withdrawing cash, with ATMs potentially being phased out in favor of expanded cashback services at retail points. Under the proposed changes, shoppers would be able to withdraw cash directly at supermarkets, pharmacies, and other shops when making a purchase, without needing a card machine or ATM nearby. For tourists visiting Crete, this shift means it is increasingly practical to pay by card at most establishments, but carrying some euro cash remains advisable, particularly in smaller villages, local tavernas, and rural areas where card terminals may be limited. Until any new system is fully implemented, visitors should plan ahead by withdrawing cash at bank ATMs in major towns such as Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos before heading to more remote destinations.
