Crete braces for 96-hour heat wave with temperatures up to 34°C

Saturday, 9 May 2026/CretaOne/1
A heat wave is set to affect Crete for approximately 96 hours, with temperatures reaching up to 34°C. The spike is driven by the transport of warm air masses from North Africa, accompanied by Saharan dust, which will also reduce air quality and visibility across the island. Tourists should expect intense heat during midday and afternoon hours. Practical advice: stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure between 12:00 and 17:00, wear light clothing and sunscreen, and keep windows closed during the hottest parts of the day to retain cooler indoor air. Air-conditioned spaces such as museums, shopping centres, and shaded tavernas offer good refuge. The Saharan dust may also cause hazy skies and irritate those with respiratory sensitivities. Carry water at all times and check local forecasts daily, as conditions can shift quickly during summer heat events.
