Over 200 Migrants Arrive at Heraklion Port as Facility Reaches Capacity

Thursday, 28 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The old cold storage facility at Heraklion port is operating at capacity following a significant surge in migrant arrivals. More than 200 people arrived within a few hours, adding to an ongoing pattern of increased migration flows reaching Crete from the eastern Mediterranean. Authorities are managing the situation at the port reception area. The facility, which serves as a temporary holding space, is under considerable strain as processing continues. For visitors arriving or departing via Heraklion port, ferry operations are not currently disrupted, but expect a heightened presence of coast guard and police personnel in and around the port area. Allow extra time when passing through the port, particularly near the older warehouse sections. Travelers with questions about ferry schedules should check directly with their operator, as conditions can change depending on operational demands placed on port staff.
